E-commerce Checkout

Research shows that many consumers would like to use their debit cards when shopping online, but have concerns that their card can be misused and their checking account compromised. At the same time, sellers would like buyers to use their debit card with PIN in order to authenticate the buyer and lower the cost of the sale. 5DSecure technology enables both sides of this transaction to achieve their goals of security and cost saving by enabling the use of the traditional PIN (which all debit cardholders already know and use for ATM transactions) to authenticate the buyer and complete the sale.

Here's how it works: During the online shopping experience, the customer is alerted to the new Adaptive Payments PIN Debit purchase process, its benefits, and told what to expect and what they need to do. After checkout from the shopping cart, as part of the purchase authorization process the customer's payment card will be screened to identify any debit card BIN. When a debit card is recognized, the Adaptive Payments platform will call the customer, 'speak' the order number and purchase amount, and then prompt for the customer's PIN. If the customer inputs their PIN into the phone keypad to authenticate themselves, the Adaptive Payments technology converts the purchase into a PIN-Debit transaction. The encrypted PIN is then incorporated into the authorization message and routed for approval -- resulting in a highly authenticated, more secure, lower cost transaction.

Bill Payment - Scheduled and Same-Day Service Options

Two 5DSecure products are available to optimize the bill payment process for both scheduled and expedited bill payment services.

Scheduled Bill Payment. With 5DSecure, bill payment providers can turn an expense into an interchange-producing transaction. And for a new generation of prepaid cardholders who don't have traditional checking accounts, 5D Secure offers the convenience of online bill payment using only their prepaid card.

Here's how it works: When a consumer pre-registers their debit card for future Biller-initiated, Issuer- or Aggregator-managed bills, the 5DSecure platform can be programmed to automatically call the customer on the scheduled date and time, 'speak' the biller name and the amount of the bill, and prompt the customer to input their PIN in order to validate themselves and authorize the transaction. The PIN is then encrypted and bundled with the customer's card for authorization at the issuer as part of the 5DSecure process. Once approved, this transaction initiates a payment to the customer's account at the biller.

In addition to customer validation, the Adaptive Payments outbound calling platform can also be programmed with bill payment-specific value-added options such as 'press 0 to question your bill' or 'press 1 to hear about a new service' that can then provide additional information and even deliver the customer to an agent for follow-up.

Same-Day Bill Payments. These transactions include both expedited online bill payment when the payment has to be at the biller the same day, or the occasional online bill payment such as traffic tickets, business licenses, and school fees. Often in addition to the payment itself, there can be a convenience fee charged for the same day or online service. These Same-Day Bill Payments can work with 5DSecure just like a traditional e-commerce transaction - that is, when a card which offers or requires PIN authentication is recognized during the transaction, the Adaptive Payment platform will call the customer, 'speak' the bill payment request, and prompt for PIN. If the customer inputs their PIN into the phone keypad to authenticate themselves, the 5DSecure technology converts the purchase into a PIN-Debit transaction. The encrypted PIN is then incorporated into the authorization message and routed for approval -- resulting in a highly authenticated, more secure, lower cost transaction.

Money Transfer

Adaptive Payments offers an Internet payment suite that enables consumers to use debit, credit or ACH to fund remittances online instead of having to visit a money transfer company location. These types of online financial transactions have typically been categorized as more risky than most, with the attendant costs and chargebacks. Now with 5DSecure technology, coupled with optional parameter-driven ID verification and OFAC screening, money transfer companies and banks can offer these more convenient transactions with much higher authentication, more security, and at a lower cost. Ask about our payment guarantee and/or indemnification service for 5DSecure technology.

The 5DSecure Technology platform can be used not only to prompt for PIN and then validate PIN for payment card transactions, it can also create 'small dollar transactions' to authenticate ownership and control of traditional checking or current accounts for ACH transactions. For ACH transactions, the 5DSecure platform calls the customer to prompt for what the amounts of the small deposits are, and then validates the inputs against those that were created and sent. This outbound calling and prompting overcomes one of the biggest problems with this type of service where customers typically do not respond to traditional messaging to come back into a website to validate the amount of the small dollar transactions.

Mobile Person-to-Person Transfers and Mobile Funds Loading

Today there are multiple Mobile Payments services being brought to market by the payment networks as well as innovative mobile technology companies around the world. The Adaptive Payments platform can power many forms of mobile loading and mobile person-to-person payments by integrating 5DSecure technology and its 'Cash2Anyone' application into these services. Senders and receivers in person-to-person transfers can be authenticated more securely using the tools that Adaptive Payments provides, and the user experience from end to end is improved and integrated to the mobile devices preferred by consumers worldwide.

Prepaid Top-Up

Prepaid accountholders want the convenience of being able to load or deposit funds to their mobile prepaid accounts when on the go. Service providers can integrate 5DSecure technology into their top-up checkout processes, so that consumers can either set up a scheduled top-up transaction request or an ad-hoc transaction. With scheduled top-up, consumers provide a payment card and a request for notification when the prepaid balance falls below a threshold they select. Then, when they receive an automated call triggered by the low balance, consumers can input the amount they want to load, and authenticate using the PIN associated to the payment card. The Adaptive Payments platform encrypts the PIN and bundles with the payment card, inserts the requested amount into the authorization request, sends the transaction to the payment card issuer, and provides the response back to the mobile provider's platform and the consumer. Just as with other Adaptive Payments products, custom messaging and offers can be inserted into the outbound calling platform to create a robust and ongoing communication platform from the provider to the customer.
